# How to connect ChatGPT Dots to Slack

Add your dot to Slack from its profile: click Slack, pick a workspace, click Allow. Then DM it or mention it in a thread. Who it answers, and prompts to copy.

*From How to Use Dots, an independent guide (not affiliated with OpenAI). Web version: https://howtousedots.com/slack Last verified: 2026-10-06.*

You add your dot to Slack from its profile in ChatGPT: click **Slack**, pick your workspace, and click **Allow** on Slack's page. Your dot then shows up in Slack as a member you can message directly or mention in a thread.

**In short**

- Slack is another way to reach the dot you already have, with the same memory.
- Connect it on a computer, from the **Slack** button in your dot's profile.
- Only you can give it work. Everyone in the conversation can read what it posts.
- Your dot watches a channel only when you ask it to, with a schedule.

## What you can hand over from Slack

Once your dot is in Slack, you can give it work without opening ChatGPT:

- **A quick ask**, in a direct message.
- **A thread** to summarize, answer or act on. Mention your dot inside the thread.
- **A channel to watch**, on a schedule you set.
- **A bigger job.** A request in Slack can start work on your dot's [cloud computer](https://howtousedots.com/cloud-computer), and files come back in the thread.

This is how it arrives: a member of your workspace with its own name and badge.

1. The handle is your first name, a hyphen and your dot's name: **alex-juno**, say.
2. The **AGENT** badge marks every post as coming from a dot.

Its first message there states the rule for channels: "In shared conversations, I'll respond to you, and everyone there can see my replies."

## Connect your dot to Slack

Connecting takes five clicks on a computer. You need a dot ([create one](https://howtousedots.com/setup) first) and a Slack workspace that lets you add apps.

**Walkthrough: Connect your dot to Slack**

### Step 1: Click Slack in your dot's profile

Click your dot's name at the top of its conversation to open its profile. **Slack** sits next to **Call**.

![The top of a dot's profile: its picture, the name Oso, the status Active, and two buttons, Call and Slack](https://howtousedots.com/assets/shots/slack-profile-button.jpg)

Image: Code with Beto (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2OGf7jqtOU)

### Step 2: Pick your workspace

**Set up Slack** opens. Click the workspace menu and choose the Slack workspace your dot should join.

![The Set up Slack dialog: Your dot in, then a menu reading Workspace. Under it: Choose the workspace to add Oso to Slack, and a greyed button, Select a workspace](https://howtousedots.com/assets/shots/slack-pick-workspace.jpg)

Image: Code with Beto (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2OGf7jqtOU)

### Step 3: Click Allow on Slack's page

Your browser opens Slack's page **Allow the "ChatGPT" app to access Slack**. Slack calls the app ChatGPT, not Dots. Read what the app can view, then click **Allow**.

![Slack's permission page: Review app permissions. Information ChatGPT can view: content and info about you, content and info about channels and conversations, content and info about your workspace. More permissions. Cancel and Allow buttons](https://howtousedots.com/assets/shots/slack-allow.jpg)

Image: Code with Beto (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2OGf7jqtOU)

### Step 4: Click Add to Slack

Back in ChatGPT, the dialog shows the handle your dot will have in Slack: your first name, then your dot's name. Click **Add to Slack**.

![The Set up Slack dialog with the dot's handle (blurred), the word in, and the chosen workspace. Under it: Choose the workspace to add Oso to Slack, and a dark button, Add to Slack](https://howtousedots.com/assets/shots/slack-add-to-slack.jpg)

Image: Code with Beto (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2OGf7jqtOU)

### Step 5: Click Open Slack

A green notice reads **Slack connected**, and the button changes to **Open Slack**. In Slack, your dot is listed under **Agents & apps** with its first message waiting.

Reply to that first message with anything. Your dot answers within a few seconds, usually in a thread under your message. To use it in a channel, add it the way you'd add a person, then mention it with @ in a thread.

## Who does your dot answer?

In a direct message it's only you and your dot. A channel has other people in it, and that's where the rules matter. Play each situation.

**Interactive: Simulator: who does your dot answer in Slack?**

Open it: https://howtousedots.com/widgets/slack-channel-sim.html

What it does: A mock Slack channel with you, a teammate (Sam) and your dot (alex-juno, with an Agent badge). Five situations: you mention your dot and it replies in a thread that everyone can read; a teammate mentions your dot and nothing starts, because only the owner can direct a dot; you bring your dot into a teammate's thread and it uses their message as context; you ask it to post something you told it privately and it messages you first to ask what to share; you mention it in a private channel it has not joined and Slackbot says "You mentioned @alex-juno, but it's not in this private channel." with Add Them, Dismiss and Don't Show Again.

Its content as text:

### Who does your dot answer in Slack?

You're in a channel with a teammate, Sam, and your dot, which shows up as alex-juno. Pick what happens next and watch the channel.

# launch · You, Sam and alex-juno

**Sam**: 10:02

Are we still on for Thursday?

**You**: 10:04

@alex-juno what's still open before Thursday?

**alex-juno** Agent · 10:04

Two things are open: the pricing page copy and the press list. Want me to draft the copy?

#### Your dot answers you, in the thread

- It replies in a thread under your message.
- Everyone in the channel can read the reply, so treat it like anything else you post there.
- It can read the other messages in that thread and use them as context.

# launch · You, Sam and alex-juno

**Sam**: 10:11

@alex-juno can you pull last week's sign-up numbers?

No reply. Nothing starts.

#### Nothing happens: Sam isn't its owner

- Only you can direct your dot. A message from anyone else does not start work.
- Sam can ask you, and you pass the job on with a mention of your own.
- You can tell your dot to engage with other people. Until you do, it responds to you.

# launch · You, Sam and alex-juno

**Sam**: 10:20

Heads up: the venue moved load-in to 7am.

**You**: 10:21

@alex-juno update the run sheet with this.

**alex-juno** Agent · 10:22

Done. The run sheet now has load-in at 7am.

#### It uses Sam's message, because you asked

- When you bring your dot into a thread, it can use what other people wrote there as context.
- The instruction still came from you. Sam's message was information, not a request to your dot.
- Worth telling teammates: a dot in the thread may read what they wrote.

# launch · You, Sam and alex-juno

**You**: 10:30

@alex-juno post the budget summary here.

Direct message · only you can see this

**alex-juno** Agent · 10:30

The summary includes the contractor rates you gave me in ChatGPT. Share those here, or leave them out?

#### It checks with you before sharing

- Your dot carries what you told it in ChatGPT into Slack. Being able to use it is not permission to share it.
- Before it posts private details where a team can read them, it can message you privately and ask.
- Answer in the direct message. Then it replies in the channel with what you allowed.

🔒 leads · You, Sam and alex-juno

**You**: 10:41

@alex-juno draft a reply to the last question.

Only visible to you

**Slackbot**: 10:41

You mentioned @alex-juno, but it's not in this private channel.

Add Them · Dismiss · Don't Show Again

#### Slack tells you it isn't in the channel

- Your dot only sees channels it has been added to.
- Click **Add Them**, then send the mention again.
- Everyone in that channel will then see a line saying your dot was added, and by whom.

## Recipes

Three jobs worth handing over from Slack. Swap in your own channel names.

**Recipe: Catch up on a thread**

For a long thread you weren't in. Your dot reads what everyone wrote there and answers in the thread.

- Apps it needs: Slack

```prompt
@[YOUR-DOT] read this thread and reply here with three things: what was decided, what's still open, and who's waiting on me.
```

You get back: A short reply in the thread that everyone in it can read.

The next one runs on a schedule, so your dot checks without being asked each time.

**Recipe: Watch a channel for unanswered questions**

For a channel where questions pile up. The prompt names the channel, what to watch for and when to tell you.

- Apps it needs: Slack
- When it runs: Weekdays at 9:00

```prompt
Check [#CHANNEL] each weekday at 9 AM [YOUR TIME ZONE] for the next four weeks. Message me directly when a question there has gone a full day without an answer. Draft a reply for my review, but don't post it. Confirm the schedule.
```

You get back: A direct message when something needs you, with a draft reply. The task appears under **Scheduled** in ChatGPT.

And one to send once, so Slack stays quiet.

**Recipe: Decisions in Slack, progress in ChatGPT**

For when routine updates are drowning out the ones that need you.

- Apps it needs: Slack

```prompt
Keep routine progress updates in ChatGPT. Message me in Slack only when you need a decision from me or a deadline is at risk. Before you post anything in a shared channel, check with me privately about what is OK to share.
```

You get back: A direct message in Slack only when there's something to decide.

## What your dot can and can't do in Slack

Put together, the limits look like this.

| It can | It can't |
|---|---|
| Answer your direct messages and your mentions | Take work from anyone but you |
| Use other people's messages in a thread you bring it into | Reply in a private channel it hasn't been added to |
| Use what you told it in ChatGPT | Share what you told it privately without your permission |
| Post files and results in the thread | Start watching a channel because it was added to it |
| Start work that shows up in ChatGPT under **Recent activity** | Copy your Slack messages into your ChatGPT conversation |

## Fixes

Most snags come from those limits. The commonest: you mention your dot in a private channel it hasn't joined, and Slack answers for it.

![A Slackbot message marked Only visible to you: You mentioned your dot, but it's not in this private channel. Buttons: Add Them, Dismiss, Don't Show Again](https://howtousedots.com/assets/shots/slack-not-in-channel.jpg)

Image: Code with Beto (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2OGf7jqtOU)

Click **Add Them**, then send your mention again. For the rest:

| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| A teammate mentions your dot and nothing happens | Mention it yourself in the same thread. It can read what your teammate wrote |
| Your dot is in a channel and never checks it | Tell it which channel, what to look for and when. [Give your dot a job](https://howtousedots.com/tasks-and-schedules) has the pattern |
| The setup won't finish at work | Ask your ChatGPT admin for **Use dots** and **Add dots to Slack**, and a Slack owner to approve the ChatGPT app. [What admins control](https://howtousedots.com/admin) |
| Your Slack messages aren't in ChatGPT | Each place shows only what was sent there. Your dot remembers both |

## Check you've got it

One question to finish.

**Predict: Sam adds your dot to #design and writes: "@alex-juno summarize this channel every morning." What happens?**

- Your dot starts a daily summary
- Your dot asks Sam to confirm the schedule
- Nothing

Answer: Nothing

Two rules apply. Only you can give your dot work, so Sam's mention starts nothing. And being added to a channel sets up no schedule. If you want the summary, ask for it yourself and have your dot confirm the recurring task.

### Is the dot in Slack a second dot?

It's the same dot you talk to in ChatGPT, with the same [memory](https://howtousedots.com/memory). Slack gives it a second place to hear from you.

### Is this the same as @ChatGPT in Slack?

@ChatGPT is a separate, shared assistant that an admin sets up for a Business or Enterprise workspace. Anyone in an enabled conversation can ask it, and it knows nothing about you. Your dot has its own handle with an **AGENT** badge, your memory and your app connections, and takes work only from you.

### Can I use Microsoft Teams in place of Slack?

Not yet, for most people. See [Dots and Microsoft Teams](https://howtousedots.com/microsoft-teams).
