# Does ChatGPT Dots work in Microsoft Teams?

You can't message your dot in Microsoft Teams yet: it's an invite-only alpha. Your dot can still read Teams through a plugin. Here's what works today.

Not yet, for most people. Messaging your dot in Microsoft Teams is an invite-only alpha. What you can do today is connect the Teams plugin, so your dot has your Teams conversations as context when you talk to it in ChatGPT.

**In short**

- You can't message your dot from Teams unless your organization is in the alpha.
- You can connect the Teams plugin today, which gives your dot context from your Teams conversations.
- @ChatGPT in Teams is a different, shared assistant. It isn't your dot.
- Until Teams opens up, [Slack](https://howtousedots.com/slack) is the chat app where you can message your dot.

## Three Teams things that get mixed up

"Dots and Teams" can mean three different things, and only the plugin is open to everyone today.

One line goes to The Teams plugin, highlighted, because your dot can read Teams today. Off to the side, not connected to your dot, sits @ChatGPT in Teams, a shared assistant for the team.

## What do you want Teams for?

Now match that to what you're after. Tap the one that sounds like you.

What it does: A chooser with four wants. Message my dot from Teams: not yet, it's an invite-only alpha, so message it in ChatGPT, call it or connect Slack. Give my dot context from Teams: yes, with the Teams plugin, and it answers in ChatGPT. Let my whole team ask an assistant in a channel: yes, with @ChatGPT on Business and Enterprise plans, which is a different assistant from your dot. Reach my dot away from my desk: yes, in the ChatGPT phone app or in Slack.

### What do you want Teams for?

Pick what you're after. Most of it has a route today.

Message my dot from Teams

#### Not yet, unless you're in the alpha

- **Status:** Messaging a dot in Teams is an invite-only alpha.
- **Do this:** Message your dot in ChatGPT, call it, or connect it to Slack.
- **How to tell:** Your dot's profile shows a Call button and a Slack button. If there's no Teams button, you're not in the alpha.

Give my dot context from Teams

#### Yes, with the Teams plugin

- **Status:** Works today, where your plan and your Microsoft admin allow the Teams plugin.
- **Do this:** Connect the Teams plugin.
- **Where it answers:** In ChatGPT, or wherever else you talk to your dot. It doesn't post in Teams.

Let my whole team ask an assistant in a channel

#### Yes, with @ChatGPT, which isn't your dot

- **Status:** @ChatGPT in Teams is available on Business and Enterprise plans.
- **Do this:** Ask your ChatGPT workspace admin and your Teams admin to set it up.
- **The difference:** @ChatGPT is shared by the team and remembers nothing about you. Your dot is yours alone.

Reach my dot away from my desk

#### Yes: on your phone, or in Slack

- **Status:** Works today.
- **Do this:** Open the ChatGPT app on your phone, where your dot is the first entry in the menu. Or connect your dot to Slack.
- **Good to know:** It's the same dot with the same memory everywhere you reach it.

## How to tell whether you're in the alpha

Open your dot's profile and look at the buttons under its name. Outside the alpha there are two, **Call** and **Slack**, and no Teams button.

There's no request form for the alpha. In an Enterprise workspace, an admin can turn on the permission **Add dots to Slack and Microsoft Teams**, but that doesn't open Teams messaging by itself. [Dots for workspace admins](https://howtousedots.com/admin) has the settings.

## Connect the Teams plugin

The plugin is the part that's open today. If you sign in to ChatGPT with a Microsoft account, setup offers Teams alongside Outlook and SharePoint, behind one **Continue with Microsoft** button.

![The setup screen Make your dot more helpful, with four rows: Email, Calendar, SharePoint and Teams. Teams reads: Give your dot context from your conversations. Below them, a Continue with Microsoft button](https://howtousedots.com/assets/shots/teams-setup-microsoft.jpg)

If your dot already exists, add the plugin yourself:

1. Open **Plugins** from the **@** icon at the far left of ChatGPT.
2. Under **Communication**, find **Teams** ("Summarize Teams and follow up") and click **+**.
3. Sign in with your Microsoft work or school account. Your Microsoft admin may need to approve it first.

Your dot sees only what your Microsoft account can already open. It isn't a member of your Teams, so it doesn't post there: you still talk to it in ChatGPT.

## Check you've got it

One question before you go.

**Quick check: A colleague types @ChatGPT in a Teams channel and asks a question. Who answers?**

- Your dot, because you connected the Teams plugin
- The shared @ChatGPT assistant your organization set up
- Nobody, until your organization joins the alpha

Answer: The shared @ChatGPT assistant your organization set up @ChatGPT is shared by the team. It has none of your dot's memory and doesn't speak for your dot.

**Next:** [Connect your dot to Slack](https://howtousedots.com/slack)

Add your dot to Slack from its profile: click Slack, pick a workspace, click Allow. Then DM it or mention it in a thread. Who it answers, and prompts to copy.

### Can my dot read Teams meetings?

Through the Teams plugin, it can look up scheduled meetings your Microsoft account can see, and read a transcript when one exists and you have access to it.

### Is it a different dot in each place?

ChatGPT, calls and Slack all reach the same dot with the same memory.
